International Women’s Day: Focus on East Timor

documentary & discussion

2009 marks ten years since East Timor’s historic independence ballot. Join us to celebrate this defining moment and the achievements of East Timorese women with a range of events throughout March 2009.

Guest Speaker: Fernanda Borges

Fernanda Borges was born in East Timor and fled to Australia

with her family when the Indonesian military invaded in 1975.

Today, Fernanda is a leading East Timorese politician and the only

female party leader in the national parliament. She will speak

about the critical role played by women then and now, and call

for justice for the crimes against humanity perpetrated against

the people of East Timor.

Documentary Film Launch

Heru Ini Lafu: Weaving Life is a unique film that journeys into rural East Timor to show a side of life rarely seen on the Australian screen. The film highlights women’s resistance and celebrates their critical role in cultural regeneration and national development. Most importantly, the film reveals the beauty of East Timorese culture and the creative processes of traditional Tais weaving.

Produced by ETWA in conjunction with Djemilla Films
