Weaving Tour 2008
Weaving Tour: 30th June – 13th July
The 2008 weaving tour was a challenging yet positive experience for the ten women who participated and for the communities we visited. Murphy’s law prevailed- what could go wrong did. Difficulties included a serious injury on day 1, English- Makalero translators pulling out at the last minute, inappropriate accommodation on day 3 & 4, vehicle breakdown on day 7 and problems with accommodation in Baucau on day 9. In 2007, more English speaking Timorese accompanied the tour group and the size of the group was probably the most challenging element. However, there were some amazing highlights like the traditional welcome in Fuat village and a dance performance and traditional story-telling in Cainliu. Precious, unexpected moments.
Other positive outcomes included:
- § Collectively the groups (Fuat, Cainliu, Los Palos) received more than $6,400 through Tais purchases and payments for food and accommodation
- § The Materestu group in Fuat are interested in processes to ensure more collective understandings and distribution of income to group members
- § The village Chief in Cainliu pledged his support for the weavers and their work
- § The Los Palos group is also looking at ways to be involved on a deeper level in tourism provision
